SCENE
SLAVES WORKING AT THE SPHINX BUILDING SITE. RAMSES AND MOSES IN A CHARIOT RACE.
MOSES:
Hey Ramses, how would you like your face carved in the wall?
RAMSES:
Someday, yes!
MOSES:
I was talking about now! (CRASHES INTO RAMSES AT HIGH SPEED. RAMSES ALMOST HAS AN ACCIDENT).
RAMSES:
You almost killed me!
MOSES:
Oh come on, where is your sense of fun?
RAMSES:
Its fun you want? (SWERVES INTO MOSES. CONTINUE RACING DANGEROUSLY)
MOSES:
Ah!
RAMSES:
Argh!

THEY BOTH CRASH INTO THE SPHINX SNAPPING OFF THE NOSE ON THE KING’S STATUE.
RAMSES:
You don’t think I’ll get in trouble for this, do you?
MOSES:
No. Not a chance!

SCENE
KING’S COURT.
KING:
Why do the God’s torment me with such reckless, destructive, blasphemous sons!
RAMSES:
Father, hear…
KING:
Be still! Pharaoh speaks. I stoop to build an Empire and your only thought is to amuse yourselves by tearing it down. Have I taught you nothing?!
HOTEP:
You mustn’t be so hard on yourself your Majesty, you are an excellent teacher but your sons know nothing other than blasphemy.
HUY:
Huh ha-ha!
MOSES:
Father the fault is mine. I goaded Ramses on and so I am responsible.
KING:
Hmm! Responsible and do you know the meaning of that word Ramses?
RAMSES:
I understand it father.
KING:
And do you understand the task for which your birth is destined? The ancient traditions. When I pass into the next world then you will be the next morning and evening star.
RAMSES:
One damaged Temple does not destroy centuries of tradition.
KING:
(ANGRILY) But one week link can break the chain of a mighty Dynasty.
QUEEN:
(SILENCES HER HUSBAND BY PLACING A HAND ON HIS ARM)
KING:
(SIGHS, SHAKING HIS HEAD IN HOPELESSNESS) Ah! You have my leave to go.
RAMSES:
Father…
QUEEN:
(RAISES HER HAND, SIGNALLING TO RAMSES TO STOP SPEAKING)
RAMSES:
(STORMS OUT. EXIT)
MOSES:
Father, you know it was really my fault, must you be so hard on him?
KING:
Moses, you will never have to carry a burden like the crown I will pass to Ramses. He must not allow himself to be led astray, not even by you, my son.
MOSES:
All he cares about is your approval. I know he will live upto your expectations, he only needs the opportunity.
KING:
Maybe, maybe so. Go now, I shall see you both tonight.
MOSES:
(BOWS AND EXITS. CURTAIN)

RAMSES:
The weak link in the chain, that’s what he called me.
MOSES:
Well, you are rather pathetic.
RAMSES:
Irresponsible, ignorant of the traditions, he practically accused me of bringing down the dynasty.
MOSES:
Yea, I can see it now, there go the pyramids. (LAUGHS)
RAMSES:
You can laugh about it.
MOSES:
That was cracking. Topic’s over. Nile’s drying up. Single handedly you will manage to bring this great Empire to ruin.
RAMSES:
Tell me something, tell me this, why is it everytime you start something, I am the one who ends up in trouble.
MOSES:
You know what your problem is Ramses, you care too much.
RAMSES:
And your problem is you don’t care at all.
MOSES:
I suppose you care more than I do that you are late for the banquet for example.
RAMSES:
I’m done for, father will kill me. (EXIT)
MOSES:
Don’t worry, no one will even notice. (EXIT)

MOSES:
Hold on Pharaoh. I propose that the high priests offer tribute to their new Regent.
HOTEP:
(TO HUY) Go get her.
HUY:
(LEAVES.RE-ENTERS WITH A COVERED CART)

MOSES:
Not too much of a snake charmer, are you?
RAMSES:
That’s right, I give her to you.
MOSES:
No no, that’s generous of you.
GYPSY GIRL:
I’m not going to be given to anyone, specially an arrogant palace rat!
RAMSES:
Are you going to let her talk to you like that?
MOSES:
You will show the proper respect for the Prince of Egypt.
GYPSY GIRL:
I’ll show you all the respect you deserve.
RAMSES:
If it pleases you father, my first act as Regent is to appoint Moses as Royal Chief Architect. (CROWD CHEERS. RAMSES PLACES THE OFFICIAL SEAL RING ON MOSES’ FINGER)

(ENTER. WATCHES THE GYPSY GIRL LEAVE AND IS STARTLED BY AN EARTHEN POT BREAKING AT HIS FEET.)
MIRIAM:
(PICKING UP PIECES OF THE BROKEN POT. SCARED) Oh! I’m sorry, I wasn’t expecting to see you here. Of all the places, at our door. Atlast.
MOSES:
(SURPRISED) Atlast!
MIRIAM
Didn’t I tell you? Didn’t I tell you Aaron, I knew he would return to us when he was ready. I knew you cared about our freedom.
MOSES:
Freedom. Why would I care about that?
MIRIAM:
Because you… you are our brother.
MOSES:
(IRRITATED) What?
MIRIAM:
They never told you?
MOSES:
Never told me what?
MIRIAM:
(GASPS) But you’re here. You, you must know. (REACHES OUT TO TOUCH MOSES)
MOSES:
(DRAWING BACK) Be careful slave!
AARON:
My good Prince, um, she’s… she’s exhausted from the day’s work, erm, nothing is too much, we quite enjoy it, but she’s, she’s confused and knows not to whom she speaks.
MIRIAM:
I know to whom I speak, Aaron, I know who you are and you are not a Prince of Egypt.
AARON:
Miriam!
MOSES:
(ANGRILY) What did you say?
AARON:
Pay her no heed, may I discuss something with you.
MIRIAM:
No. Aaron No! Please Moses you mustn’t leave. You were born…
AARON:
That’s enough. (PLEADING WITH MIRIAM)
MIRIAM:
…of my mother Yohemen. You are, our brother.
MOSES:
Now you go too far. You shall be punished.
AARON:
(KNEELING) Please your highness, she’s ill, she’s very ill, we beg your forgiveness. Please Miriam, now let us…
MIRIAM:
No Aaron, our mother set you adrift in a basket to save your life.
MOSES:
Save my life? From whom?
MIRIAM:
Ask the man that you call father.
MOSES:
How dare you.
MIRIAM:
God saved you so you could be our deliverer…
MOSES:
Enough of this.
MIRIAM:
… and you are! Moses you are our deliverer.
MOSES:
(SHOUTING) I said enough!
(FORCES HER TO HER KNEES) You will regret this night.
(WALKS AWAY)

MOSES:
You saw what happened, I just killed a man.
RAMSES:
We can take care of that. I can make it so it never happened.
MOSES:
Nothing you say can change what I have done.
RAMSES:
I am Egypt, the morning and the evening star. If I say day is night, it will be written and you will be what I say you are. I say you are innocent.
MOSES:
What you say does not matter. You don’t understand. I can’t stay here any longer.
RAMSES:
Moses.
MOSES:
No, all I have ever known to be true is a lie. (SIGHS) I am not who you think I am.
RAMSES:
What are you talking about?
MOSES:
Go ask the man I once called father.
RAMSES:

JETHRO:
My children, let us give thanks for this bountiful food and let us also give thanks for the presence of this brave young man whom we honour here tonight.
MOSES:
Really Sir, I wish you wouldn’t. I have done nothing in my life worth honouring.
JETHRO:
First you rescue TZIPPORAH from Egypt, then you defend my younger daughters. Such brilliance! You think that is lucky? It seems you don’t know what is worthy of honour.

TRIBE CELEBRATES WITH DANCE AND SONG. MOSES AND TZIPPORAH ARE WED.
CHIEF JETHRO:
(SINGS)
“A single thread in a tapestry,
Though it’s colour brightly shines,
Can never see its purpose,
In the pattern of the grand design.
And the stone that sits on the very top
Of the mountains mighty face,
Doesn’t think it’s more important than
The stones that form the base
So how can you see what your life is worth
Or where your value lies.
You can never see through the eyes of man,
You must look at your life,
Look at your life through Heaven’s Eyes.
So how do you measure the worth of a man,
The answer will come to him who tries to look at his life
Through Heaven’s Eyes.
(CURTAIN)

SCENE

(VERY SOFTLY) Moses…

(LOUDER) Moses…

(GETTING LOUDER) Moses… Moses…
MOSES:
Here I am.
GOD:
Take your sandals from your feet. The place where you stand is Holy ground.
MOSES:
Who are you?
GOD:
I am that I am.
MOSES:
I don’t understand.
GOD:
I am the God of your ancestors. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
MOSES:
(DROPS HIS STAFF, TAKES OFF HIS SANDALS AND THROWS THEM.) What do you want with me?
GOD:
I have seen the oppression of my people in Egypt and have heard their cries. So I have come down to deliver them from slavery and bring them to a good land. A land flowing with milk and honey. So, unto Pharaoh, I shall send you.
MOSES:
Me? Who am I to lead these people? They’ll never believe me, they won’t even listen.
GOD:
I shall teach you what to say.
MOSES:
I was their enemy. I was the Prince of Egypt, the son of the man who slaughtered their children. You’ve, you’ve chosen the wrong messenger. How can I speak to these people?
GOD:
(ANGRILY) Who made mankind? Who made the deaf, the mute, the seeing and all the blind, did not I? Now go!
(GENTLY) Oh Moses, I shall be with you when you go to the King of Egypt but Pharaoh will not listen. So I will stretch out my hand and smite Egypt with all my wonders. Take the staff in your hand Moses, with it you shall do my wonders. I shall be with you Moses. Moses… (FADES. CURTAINS.)

But Moses, you are just one man.
MOSES:
Tzipporah, please, look at your family. They are free, they have a future. They have hopes and dreams and the promise of a life with dignity. That is what I want for my people and that is why I must do the task that God has given me.

RAMSES:
But look at you. Why on Earth are you dressed like…? (LAUGHS)
MOSES:
Oh! Ha-ha, Ramses! (HUGS HIS BROTHER) It’s so good to see you.
HUY:
Excuse me, erm your majesty.
HOTEP:
We are compelled to remind you that this man committed a serious crime against the Gods.
HUY:
We are loathe to bring it up mind you.
HOTEP:
Oh yeah, in the law the punishment states that for such a crime we hesitate to say…
RAMESE:
(RAISING A HAND) Be still! Pharaoh speaks. I am the morning and the evening star. It shall be as I say.
MOSES:
Ramses…
RAMSES:
(HOLDING UP HIS HAND TO SILENCE HIM) I pardon forever all the crimes of which he stands accused and will have it known that he is our brother Moses, the Prince of Egypt.
MOSES:
Ramses in my heart you are my brother but things cannot be as they were.
RAMSES:
I see no reason why not.
MOSES:
You know I am a Hebrew and the God of the Hebrews came to me.
RAMSES:
What!
MOSES:
He commands that you let his people go.
RAMSES:
Commands?
MOSES:
Behold the power of God.
(TURNS HIS STAFF INTO A COBRA)
RAMSES:
(AMUSED) Well what do you know? Impressive. Hmm. Very well Moses I’ll play along. Hotep, Hoy, give this snake charmer our answer.
HOTEP, HOY:
(SNIGGERING. MUSIC. LIGHTS) By the power of Ra… newt, tartar, neputis, petus, zordek, zackmet, soltar, zacht, freshtu, wat, abjec, anubis, sachu, bashas, newit, sut, maphtec, Ra… Ra…
HOTEP:
(SINGING) So you think you’ve got friends in high places,
With the power to put us under wraps.
Well forgive us these smiles on our faces,
You’ll know what power is when we are done, son.
You’re playing with the big boys now,
You’re playing with the big boys now.
Every spell and gesture, tells who the best here is…
HOTEP, HOY:
Playing with the big boys now,
Playing with the big boys now.
HOTEP:
Stop this mission, what’s a true magician
In an exhibition house.
Pick up your silly trick boy
(POINTING TO MOSES SNAKE. TURN THEIR STAFFS INTO COBRAS.)
CROWD:
(CHEERS.)

MOSES COBRA EATS THE PHAROAHS COBRAS AND TURNS BACK TO A STAFF.
MOSES:
(PICKING HIS STAFF FROM THE FLOOR)
RAMSES:
Hehe all right Moses, I know you. What’s this really about?
MOSES:
Ramses look out of the window, what do you really see?
RAMSES:
A greater Egypt than that of my father.
MOSES:
That is not what I see.
RAMSES:
(SCOFFS) Moses I cannot change what you see. I have to maintain the ancient traditions I bear the weight of my father’s crown.
MOSES:
Do you still not understand what our father was?
RAMSES:
He was a great leader.
MOSES:
His hands bore the blood of thousands of children.
RAMSES:
Huh! Slaves.
MOSES:
My people and I can no longer hide in the dessert while they suffer, at your hands. Ramses, let my people go.
RAMSES:
Still gnawing on that bone are we?
MOSES:
You cannot keep ignoring us.
RAMSES:
Enough! I will hear no more of this Hebrew nonsense.
TZIPPORAH:
Moses…
GOD:
(VOICE HEARD BY MOSES) Take the staff in your hand Moses.
CROWD:
(GASPS. THEIR WATER IN THEIR GLASSES TURNS TO BLOOD)
GUARD:
It’s… its blood!
CROWD:
(STARTS PANICKING)
RAMSES:
Hotep, Hoy! Explain this to me.
FAT PRIEST:
Ah! Rest assured your majesty we are going to demonstrate the power of the superior might of our God.
TALL PRIEST:
By the power of Ra… (MIX POWDER IN A BOWL OF WATER. COLOUR OF WATER CHANGES TO RED)
RAMSES:
(LAUGHING HEARTILY) So you have returned only to free them. Abandon this futile mission Moses. I’ve indulged you long enough. This must now be finished.
MOSES:
(TAKES OFF HIS BROTHERS RING AND PLACES IT ON THE THRONE). No Ramses, this is only the beginning. I’m sorry.
RAMSES:
Yes, I had hoped. I do not know this God, neither will I let your people go.
MOSES:
Ramses please, you must listen.
RAMSES:
I will not be the weak link. Tell your people after today their work load is doubled thanks to their God, or is it thanks to you. (CURTAIN)

(FLINGS MUD AT MOSES)

Moses!
AARON:
So Moses, how does it feel when you get struck to the ground?
MOSES:
I didn’t mean to cause you more pain. I am just trying to do what God told me.
AARON:
God. When did God start caring about any of us? Infact Moses, when did you start caring about slaves? Was it when you found out you were one of us?
TZIPPORAH:
Don’t listen to him.
MOSES:
No Tzipporah he is right. I did not wish to see.
MIRIAM:
Aaron you should be ashamed of yourself.
MOSES:
Miriam I’m so sorry. (SIGHS)
MIRIAM:
Moses, hear what I say. I’ve been a slave all my life. God has never answered my prayers until now. God saved you from the river, saved you in all your wonderings, even now he saves you from the wrath of Pharaoh. God will not abandon you. So don’t you abandon us.
AARON:
But Moses didn’t you see what happened? The priests did the same thing. Pharaoh still has the power over our lives.
MOSES:
Yes Aaron that’s true, Pharaoh has the power. He can take away your food, your home, your freedom. He can take away your sons and daughters, with one word Pharaoh can take away your very lives but there is one thing he cannot take away from you, your faith. Believe for we shall see God’s wonders. (CURTAINS)

(VOICE HEARD) With this staff you shall do my wonders.

(VOICE HEARD) Attack! Attack! Kill them.
MOSES:
